ABOUT GEMMA CARVER
Gemma Carver first studied fashion in “Accademia Ittaliana,” Florence, Italy. Her time there was to have a profound effect on Gemma and she took much of what she learnt back to Scotland, where she continued 3 years of study at “The Scottish School of fashion and Textiles,” Galasheils. This period, deep in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, was essential in Gemma’s mastery of design and manufacturing technique.
Before finishing her degree she was selected to be part of “Project Catwalk,” on SKY 1, which aimed to find the best emerging designers in the UK, working alongside Giles Deacon, Julien Macdonald, FROSTFRENCH, Isabella Blow, and mentored by Ben Di Lisi.
Soon Gemma began working “in-house” for the studio’s of Giles Deacon and Amiee McWilliams, enhancing her skills and providing her final motivation towards building a label of her own- NONCHALANT. But, ever the perfectionist, she still yearned for deeper knowledge of production to back her creative skills and decided to move to the home of textile and clothing production, India.
As Head designer for “Janavi,” originally an Indian cashmere company/export house, she created a debut womenswear range as well as a couture collection in collaboration with Jakob Schlaepfer and India’s top designers Rohit Bal, Tarun Talliani and Gurav Gupta.
THE VISION OF GEMMA CARVER
“The soul is our eternal presence, undiscovered by some who are consumed with their own mundane everyday lives the ego takes over never allowing the true essence to be revealed. The beauty lies like a seed, only propagated when infiltrated with nourishment, the seedling is very fragile, exposed and fighting for survival. I want to wear the heart on the sleeve, displaying your fragility behind all the confident expression.”
