The Tamarind is a boutique hotel situated in the very heart of Anjuna, adjacent to St. Michael’s church. The property beautifully blends contemporary aesthetics into Portuguese-styled architecture. With an intimate retreat-like environment, in addition to well appointed rooms, it features a café, a multi-cuisine restaurant and a bar & lounge. Designed for tastes of a self-indulgent traveller, one may have a quintessential Goan experience here. The Tamarind is open throughout the year.

It lies in a quiet neighbourhood in Anjuna, on the wide bend adjacent to the four-hundred-year old St. Michael’s church. The Tamarind marries old Portuguese styles with modern fashionable décor. Set amidst bougainvillea trees and lush cover, this building has white and turquoise blue accents. It houses twenty-five rooms, nearly all of which overlook a huge azure swimming pool whose periphery is dotted with palm trees and turquoise chaise loungers.

Dining areas are along the wide corridor and in the pretty garden. The bar and lounge area is themed on the likes of Alice in Wonderland  with plush white and black interiors. The premise also features a community neighbourhood library concept called Litte Free Library, a one-of-its-kind for a hotel in India. One is free to take a book and replace with another book for others to read.

'Love Goa' is a thought that is genuinely and generously embraced here with an intention to minimise negative impact on Goa at best. All furniture in the entire premises is recycled from scrap yards and refurbished to suit the theme. Guests are encouraged to ride around bicycles which are provided complimentary. The famous miraculous cross on Anjuna hill with one hundred steps is nearby. One may choose to lend to its surrounding myth of climbing to the top and making a wish.

With an intimate and happy setting like this, it is most favoured by musical bands - Indus Creed, Parikrama, MIDIval Punditz to mention a few; and groups of friends who seek privacy and inspiration. Helping one rediscover simple things in life is the singular philosophy embraced at The Tamarind.

Dining options are aplenty and the area can accommodate over hundred guests on maximum occupancy. One may choose to savour traditional Indian delicacies or dishes from an elaborate multi-cuisine menu. Breakfast buffet is served everyday; all day.

This is a specialty restaurant serving Indian and Tandoor dishes. Handpicked chefs and ingredients are flown in from North India and the meat from Mumbai for authentic flavours. Traditional family recipes are cooked; Butter Chicken amongst which is considered the best in North Goa. Favourites include Burra Kebab, Malai Tikka, Tandoori prawns and lobster.

This café is named and themed after a blue migratory bird which frequents Goa in the monsoons. Artistic interpretations of the bird can be noticed in the décor. One can dine al-fresco should one desire more greenery around. Music is here all day, a playlist specially collated by Gaurav Raina, one half of MIDIval  Punditz.

Sandwiches, desserts and organic salads make up most of the menu here. Focus is on fresh, quality and organic ingredients. Whether one relishes meat, pastas, open sandwiches or a selection of curries, the café caters to all kinds of appetites. Of particular mention would be Open Pesto Chicken Sandwich in home-made bread, Rocket Parmesan Salad and the Full English Breakfast. Steamed Fish soaked in Rosemary is a house favourite.

Since the breads are baked in-house daily, they are always fresh. One has a choice of maize-free breads or brown wheat breads.

With a qualified baker in the family, the dessert recipes which have been passed down from the mother are still followed. Amongst desserts, Banofee Pie is a winner; although Mississippi Mud Pie Cake with Icecream is not far behind. Healthier options like gluten-free and organic sugar cakes like Chocolate Pudsey Cake are a welcome find. These cakes and desserts are also available on custom orders for any occasion.

Larger groups can reserve the entire venue including the bar & lounge for private parties and celebrations.

Themed around Alice in Wonderland, the bar and lounge is designed to evoke a sense of fantasy and fun. With black and white interiors, plush furniture and banquette booths, this provides for an ambience to enjoy a well-aged wine or scotch or any of the exciting concoctions on offer. Both Indian and imported liquor is served here.

The lounge has two TVs - a 50” and 42” for games and matches. Guests in spirit could try their hands at foosball, snooker and ping-pong. Karaoke nights will happen regularly; and sports screenings during important football and cricket matches. Live music bands will perform every Thursdays.

There is a complimentary ferry service for guests so they avoid driving after drinking or to prompt someone to get out of their residence.

The traditional Goan charm is well preserved in the Portuguese Patrao suites. Designed to be naturally bright and airy, aquatic blue and sunkissed-yellow contrast the white exposed stone walls.

Each of the spacious twenty-five rooms is double-bedded, air conditioned, has an extended lounge area laden with terra-cotta floors and unique Goan furniture. A king-sized bed with tall headrests, clean linen, soft mattress, fluffy pillows and spotless mirrors fill the rest of the room.

Rooms on the ground floor come with a patio and the ones above come with a private balcony overlooking the large swimming pool.

A bevy of modern amenities are available in every room - 42” HD flat screen TVs, TataSky entertainment, free WiFi, mini bar, coffee machine, laptop safety locker/private safe.

Guests can order from the comfort of their rooms for breakfast in bed and in-room dining 24/7.

Established in 1987, the structure was originally built by famous Goan architects Gerard Da Cunha and Dean D’Cruz. Gaurav Arya came to Goa in the year 2000. He would leave but only to return repeatedly, a feeling which prompted him to settle down here. Hailing  from a family of hoteliers, it was quite natural to explore the Goan hospitality landscape and found this as treasure. The Tamarind is a testimony of their family’s love and affection for the state.

Gaurav’s hobby of collecting vintage paraphernalia is quite evident. One might notice vintage bikes and guitars presented in the garden on most nights during the season. Just like the retreat, his thoughts mingle old with the new as he plans to collect the latest editions of bikes which he has vintages of.

“We did not choose Goa, Goa chose us! We are here and we are grateful for the acceptance from this wonderful beachside city. At The Tamarind we have badges for all our staff that says 'Love Goa', because we really, truly do.”
