The Hobbit is located in St. Michael's Vaddo, a secluded part of the South Anjuna village. The quaint yet luxurious villa is built into a hill above a sandy cove and is cleverly designed to blend into the natural surroundings. The walls of the house are the original laterite rock of the inside of the hill. In some places, plants grow out of the walls, and in the monsoons, natural streams of ground water flow out of the rocks into channels along the walls.
Spread over two levels, The Hobbit has a sitting and dining room, meditation alcove, and kitchenette, with plenty of porches to enjoy the beautiful and spectacular views, a roof terrace, a small plunge pool, and semi-open bathrooms around exposed rock with sweeping views of the beach and the neighboring cliff. The rooms are simple yet have plenty of character, with walls colourfully painted to reflect the natural and bohemian ambience that South Anjuna is known for.
Access to The Hobbit requires a short uphill walk.
There are 3 air-conditioned double bedrooms, each with attached private bathrooms, and in total can accommodate six people comfortably. All rooms have their own balcony and sit-out area, with breathtaking views of the sea and the lush garden below. The décor is bohemian chic, with white stone walls painted with plenty of soft and colourful designs covering its entire length, complimenting the wealth of nature that surrounds the villa. The spacious and breezy feature of the bedrooms extends to the bathrooms, designed with yellow Jaisalmer stone for the basin and where the shower stall is carved from the cliff and with a stunning view overlooking the sea.
Built over two floors, there is a mini level in between from where guests can sit on the roof of the level below and enjoy the view of the sea; also known as the Meditation Room. The Hobbit is often booked up by larger groups and therefore acts mostly as a villa rather than a hotel. A large Living Area is located on the lowest level on the left, with a well-equipped kitchen, wide-screen TV and DVD player. In keeping with the bohemian décor of the property, the walls beautifully reflect the colours of the sky and the sea. To the right of the South Bedroom and living area is the North Bedroom, with a unique washroom and shower area located behind the pillars. The top level consists of a self-contained Upstairs Suite with an attached kitchenette and an open-air shower area.
The current owners, also proprietors of Curlie’s, bought The Hobbit 10 years ago from a retired hippie who decided to sell once he had run out of finances and the energy to upkeep the property.
Following the takeover, renovations got under way and into making the villa what it is today. With important instructions to maintain the organic framework of the rock, the main changes included installing running water, where two wells only previously existed. Using soft and earth colours, the vision was to decorate The Hobbit with a bohemian décor, reminiscent of South Anjuna’s history. The stone walls still remain, but are now painted with enchanting and ‘hippy-like’ designs.
